Celebrating 50 years in 2014, the JCDecaux Group has pioneered the model of public services in exchange for advertising. JCDecaux’s story began in Beauvais in 1953 when Jean-Claude Decaux, whose family ran a shoe shop, realised the value poster advertising had to his parent’s business. When other local companies wanted him to promote their businesses using posters too, it was inevitable that this young entrepreneur would set up his own company. Posters evolved to billboards and this in turn evolved to the model of public services in exchange for advertising.
The first city to adopt the new public service facility provided by Jean-Claude Decaux was Lyon and in 1964 JCDecaux was formed. JCDecaux is now present in more than 60 countries and over 3,700 cities, with advertising formats reaching over 300 million people on a daily basis.
It is the only global company that is exclusively focused on outdoor advertising. In 2003, Vienna was the first city to introduce a bike share rental scheme.
In 2009 we launched dublinbikes, the first public bike share rental scheme in Ireland. dublinbikes has continued to be one of the most successful bike share rental schemes worldwide since launch and due to this success, it is currently under expansion, bringing more bikes and stations to Dubliners and visitors to the city. JCDecaux bike share rental schemes are now present in 69 cities in 10 countries across the globe.
From Australia to Portugal, there are 47,000 self-service bicycles and over 350 million bike rentals since the launch of the first scheme in 2003.
